The Sapphires
The Sapphires are one of Australia's favourite stories. Winning numerous awards as a play, film and soundtrack album there was one thing to do left, and that was to take on a national tour of Australia. Bringing the raw power, fun and heart of this story to various stages across Australia. Writer Tony Briggs will translate and bring his work to the stage in a version he says will be a very personal and unique telling of The Sapphires story.
He hopes the audience will be able to relate and feel connected to a story that has seeped into the consciousness of the Australian theatre and movie-going audiences and get a feeling of joy and profound insight of who Aboriginal people are. The hope is for people to take away from ‘The Sapphires' comfort and happiness.
Four young women who hail from regional Australia love singing country music, and They unexpectedly get the opportunity to change their lives, their fashion and their song. Armed with uniforms of sequins and equipped with microphones, they find themselves in a position to make people happy in the thick of Vietnam War.
The Sapphires is a hilarious, emotional tale based on the real story of the writer's mother. It narrates of the unbelievable adventure of a singing group of four Yorta Yorta Women, who express Motown soul with their incredible voices in a time of personal transformation and considerable social unrest. It is an explosive, fun and immersive play that celebrates life and the actualisation of dreams.
The writer, Briggs, combines reality and fiction to give life to his life-affirming story. The play is political in parts but still mostly personal and intimate. The pay is about the fulfilment of dreams. It refuses to pigeon-hole people and put them in a box. It explores hope in every sense.
Catch The Sapphires on March 15 – 16 at Home of the Arts.
Guy Montgomery
It may be a stretch, but Guy Montgomery hasn't always been the best. While most people are well- mannered and caring from birth, this has not been the case with Guy.
Guy has been born into a world of privilege being a white, straight guy from Christchurch, New Zealand. Although he has desperately tried to grow and educate himself, to be "woke" so to speak, there aren't many minorities Guy hasn't stepped on along the path to becoming a better human being. Grab this rare moment and witness as Guy unlearns the various traits that turned him into someone who is part of the problem.
Guy's sharp, biting comedy tackles the best and the worst of humanity even as you laugh your head off. Addicting and whip-smart, you'll be thoroughly entertained. Catch the show on March 22 at Home of the Arts.
Sometimes Always Never
Able to blend convey gruffness and winning charm with just the raise of an eyebrow, Bill Nighy has already established himself as one of Britain's most prominent character actors. He stars with a talented cast of actors such as Sam Riley and Alice Lowe in this beautiful and heart-warming comedy-drama about a tailor in search of his long-lost son.
Sharp in his suit and manner, Nighy (The Bookshop), is at his deadpan best as Scrabble-loving Merseyside tailor Alan, whose eldest son Michael walked out of the house after a particularly heated round of the favourite board game. His son never came back. Years after, Alan and his other son Peter (Sam Riley) carry on the search while trying to fix their broken relationship.
Bringing to life the funny and sharp script by seasoned screenwriter Frank Cottrell-Boyce, Liverpudlian director Carl Hunter employs a bright visual style and eye-popping production design to express the ever-changing moods of a family who have an abundance of knowledge when it comes to works but still find it impossible to communicate.
